Chemical & solvent-resistant labels for drum labelling
Drum, IBC and jerrycan labels sit in the worst environment a printed label can face — solvent splash, sunlight, wash-down and abrasion, sometimes for years. Paper labels turn to pulp inside a week. Here's how to spec a chemical-resistant label and ribbon combination that survives the job in New Zealand conditions.
Face stock: polyester, not paper
Coated paper labels swell and disintegrate on first contact with solvent, oil or wash-down water. Polypropylene (BOPP) handles mild chemistry but breaks down under aggressive solvents. For drum labelling you want white polyester (PET) with a high-tack acrylic adhesive — it's rated for continuous solvent contact, UV and temperatures up to 150°C.
Ribbon: full resin only
Wax and wax-resin ribbons rub off the moment they meet acetone, MEK or brake cleaner. For any chemical label the print itself has to be as tough as the substrate — full-resin thermal transfer ribbon bonds chemically to polyester and holds barcode and text through repeated solvent wipe tests (typically 15+ MEK double-rubs).
GHS compliance and the red diamond
NZ WorkSafe adopts the GHS pictogram set — the red diamond warning symbols. You can pre-print those in colour on plain polyester and thermal-transfer the batch, product and hazard text on top with a black resin ribbon. The label needs to hold both prints through the drum's working life; polyester + resin is the only combination that reliably does.
Adhesive: high-tack acrylic for steel and HDPE
Standard permanent acrylics grip clean steel but lift on HDPE drums and jerrycans (low surface energy). Ask for a high-tack acrylic or a modified rubber adhesive when labelling plastic containers. Clean the drum with isopropyl alcohol before applying — grease and dust are the two most common causes of label lift.
