Food & retail barcode labels — a practical NZ printing guide

Retail barcode labels need to scan first time, every time. Miss on a supermarket line and you're pulled off the shelf. Here's what actually matters when printing food and retail barcode labels in New Zealand — GS1 formatting, date and batch coding, PLU labels, and which printer and ribbon combinations pass shelf-scan tests.

GS1 barcodes — get the format right first

Every NZ supermarket runs GS1 barcodes — typically EAN-13 for retail packs, ITF-14 for cartons, and GS1-128 for date/batch/lot. Register your prefix with GS1 New Zealand, then generate the codes from that assigned prefix. Print at 100% magnification (SC scale 2 for EAN-13) with a "quiet zone" clear space at each end — cropping that quiet zone is the single biggest cause of failed scans.

Direct thermal vs thermal transfer

For short shelf-life food (fresh meat, deli, ready meals) direct thermal is faster and cheaper — no ribbon to manage, print rolls straight through a desktop printer. For pantry, dairy and frozen product with longer shelf life, thermal transfer with a wax-resin ribbon holds the barcode readable for years. Never use direct thermal on anything that lives near heat or under fluorescent shelving for more than a few months — the coating fogs.

Date & batch coding

MPI food safety rules require date-marking and traceability on all packaged food sold in NZ. Format dates as DD/MM/YY or DD-MMM-YYYY (three-letter month reduces ambiguity for exports). Include batch or lot number on the same label as the barcode — thermal printers handle both in one pass from any labelling software.

PLU and shelf labels

PLU (Price Look-Up) labels for produce and deli are usually 50 x 25 mm or 40 x 28 mm direct thermal — cheap, replaceable, no ribbon. Shelf-edge labels for supermarket use are typically 76 x 26 mm or 100 x 40 mm and printed on wax-resin for a longer swap cycle.
