Cold storage & freezer labels — sub-zero labelling that actually sticks

Standard label adhesives crystallise below 0°C and lift off frozen cartons within days. If you're labelling meat, seafood, dairy or pharmaceutical product bound for a -18°C or -40°C freezer, you need a freezer-grade adhesive and — often — a direct-thermal face stock that survives the condensation cycle.

Two temperatures matter: application and storage

Freezer adhesives are rated for two numbers — the temperature at which you can apply the label, and the temperature at which the label stays stuck once applied. Standard permanent acrylics need +5°C or warmer at application. All-temp / cold-apply acrylics apply down to -20°C and hold to -40°C. If you're printing at ambient and moving into the freezer within an hour, standard freezer-grade acrylic is fine. If you're labelling already-frozen product on the loading dock, specify cold-apply.

Face stock: freezer-grade DT or synthetic

Freezer-grade direct thermal (DT) has a stabilised coating that resists the freeze-thaw condensation cycle and holds scan-quality barcodes for the product's frozen life. Standard economy DT fogs and blackens after a few cycles. For meat and seafood cartons that get repeatedly wet, use a synthetic (BOPP or polyester) with a freezer adhesive and thermal-transfer print instead.

Surface prep: dry the carton

The single most common reason freezer labels fall off is applying them to a damp or dusty carton. Wipe the surface, apply firm pressure with a roller (not just a hand press), and give the adhesive 24 hours at ambient before moving into deep freeze if you can.
